Application Process

What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Harris County is a non-profit faith based organization
building affordable housing in partnership between those who wish to better
their housing situation and Habitat.

How can I qualify for a Habitat home?

You may be eligible for a Habitat home if you meet the 3 basic guidelines; need,
your income level, willing to partner with Habitat.

1. I have need:

The housing I live in now is at least one of the following:

         •     Overcrowded
         •     Poorly maintained (substandard)
         •     In a dangerous neighborhood
         •     I live with family, or friends, or in a long term shelter

2. Your income level:

In general to qualify for a Habitat home you must be within 40-60% of the Harris County
low income guidelines for a family of your size. In addition you must have the ability to
pay a mortgage including escrowed tax and insurance taking into account total current
debt. Your credit score must be above 500.  (Note: Habitat for Humanity NWHC will
determine your eligibility for this step, based upon financial information you will be asked
to provide after an initial orientation meeting – see details below).

3. Willing to partner with Habitat:

I am willing to partner with Habitat and put 350 hours of “sweat equity” in building family
homes, both others and my own. I will attend budget classes and a homeowner workshop
(as part of sweat equity hours).

If you can answer yes to our basic guidelines above, then please plan to attend an Orientation meeting for prospective homeowners:

                When:    to be determined
                Where:

You MUST attend the Orientation meeting in order to apply for a Habitat home.

You must be on time. Doors will be closed at the start of the meeting and no one will be allowed to enter after the meeting has begun. Attendees may leave at any time but you can not move on to
step 2 – to make an application if you leave early. No documentation is required at this
meeting, but you may wish to bring a pen in order to take notes. Date and location of the application meeting will be announced at this meeting. This meeting will last about one and a half hours.

We encourge you to find child care for your children.  No food or drink will be allowed in the meeting room.
