Opportunities
HOW TO PARTICIPATE Habitat is a volunteer driven organization. NWHC has only a few paid staff members, but had over 2500 volunteers in 2007 that helped us carry out our work. The tangible results of a day on the build site or the emotional involvement in a family’s growth are things that make the Habitat experience more fulfilling than you can ever imagine. We give volunteers an opportunity to not only make a difference, but also make a connection with a family moving toward stability, entitlement, and homeownership. Our volunteer opportunities mainly fall into four areas:
Build Site: This is our most popular activity and what most people think of when they consider helping Habitat. We build most every Wednesday and Saturday and prior experience or your own tools are not required. If you are coming as an individual you are welcome to just show up at our site. Please refer to web parts ‘Volunteer Instructions’ & ‘Maps’ for more detailed information. If you are part of a group (4 or more people) you must pre-register with our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@habitatnwhc.org or joyce7.campbell@sbcglobal.net. We try to not have more folks at our site than we have work available.
Committees: Very important to our success is the work of our 10 standing committees. For details or how to get involved with a committee please go to the ‘Committees’ section that follows.
ReStore: The ReStore is our resale shop where we sell donated used building products, construction materials, appliances and furniture. For more information go to the ReStore icon on the web site or contact Arthur at 832-327-1120 or arthur@habitatnwhc.org
Office: The office is open from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm Monday to Friday. We need volunteers to answer the phone, help with mailings, filing, entering computer data, and other special projects. To get more information about this contact Mary Grace Hendon at the office (281-820-2307) or at volunteer@habitatnwhc.org. We ask that you are available at least one half day per week.
CURRENT SPECIAL NEEDS
Construction Red Hats: There is a significant on-going need for construction foremen/women to supervise other volunteers on Saturday mornings. This includes training, motivation, and managing QC. Prior construction experience is helpful, but we will train. Contact Bob Young at bobyoung@entouch.com

VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION Once a quarter Northwest Harris County holds a Volunteer Orientation workshop where we invite anyone who is a potential volunteer to come and hear about the various opportunities available and to actually sign-up if you see something of interest. Each session last about one hour with time to ask questions and meet current volunteers. All Orientations are held at the Affiliate office which is located in the back of our resale shop, the ReStore, located at 13572 State Highway 249. There is no obligation to become involved, but we are confident you will leave with a better understanding of who we are. It is not necessary to attend one of these meetings to volunteer with Habitat.
