Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization.  Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Harris County (Habitat NWHC) seeks volunteers with skills as well as compassion.  Some of our volunteers are skilled carpenters, while others just have good hearts and willing hands. The common thread is the desire to give back to the community.  By donating your time, you can make a difference in the lives of families in need throughout Northwest Harris County!

Habitat Volunteers:
• Develop new skills
• Make new friends
• Provide expertise to the organization
• Have fun while helping to better the lives of others

Once a quarter Habitat NWHC holds a Volunteer Orientation to provide more information and to answer questions. To learn more about this workshop please visit the Volunteer Orientation page.

There are many different ways and opportunities to volunteer:

Construction: This is our most popular activity and what most people think of when they consider helping Habitat.  We build every Wednesday and Thursday from 8am-2:30pm and Saturday from 8am-3pm (lunch is provided for all volunteers on Saturdays). No prior experience is needed. We do project training each morning, on-site and all tools are provided. All construction volunteers must be at least 14 years old.  No one under the age of 14 will be permitted on the construction site for safety and liability reasons.  Individuals are invited to just show up at our work site. Groups of 5 or more must schedule work days with our Family Services & Volunteer Coordinator, Karly Grilliot akgrilliot@habitatnwhc.org  prior to coming out.

Committees: These work groups do the behind-the-scenes work selecting our partner families, locating and preparing worksites, raising funds, advocating within the community and more. The affiliate currently has 10 functioning committees—Construction, Church Relations, Family Selection, Family Support, Information Technology, Marketing/Fundraising, Real Estate, ReStore, Tool Box Bash, and Women’s Build. To learn more please visit our committees page.

Deconstruction: Deconstruction is the hand demolition of buildings in the reverse order of their construction in order to carefully remove materials for reuse and recycling. This technique reduces the disposal of materials into landfills, and provides materials to resale in our ReStore. All proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity NWHC and the community! Deconstruction is labor intensive.  It requires good communication and willingness to work in pairs and within an overall team. No prior experience is necessary. Deconstruction project locations vary. Volunteers must be flexible, learning of project dates, times and locations only 2 or 3 weeks in advance.

Lunch Services: On Saturday work days there will be 40 to 140 volunteers on-site. Donated lunches are extremely important as we always offer free lunch to our volunteers to show our appreciation and to provide a needed energy boosting break.

Office: The office is open from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:00 am until 5:00 pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.  We need volunteers to help answer phones, help with mailings, filing, entering computer data, and other special projects.

ReStore: The ReStore was established to take in building materials, appliances and household items in new or gently used condition to resell to the public. Funds received from sales are used to enhance our construction program. Donations, clerks, stockers, donation solicitations and customer service are just a few of the different venues for volunteering with this project. Our ReStore is open Monday-Saturday from 9am-6pm.

Traders Village: This is the largest flea market in Houston where hundreds of venders sell and advertise their goods. The affiliate runs a booth every weekend from 8am-5pm selling items from our ReStore. Volunteers work two hour shifts, answering questions about Habitat and selling items on-site.
